As children, many girls can remember the days of dressing up in their mother’s high heel shoes, putting on her necklaces and bracelets, and most importantly trying on every shade of lipstick she owned. Playing dress-up and make-up was a big part of almost every young girl’s idea of fun. These were the days when it was innocent for a little girl to have on a face full of make-up and walk around the house. It is not so innocent, however, when young girls are translating playtime with make-up into real life everyday make-up.
There is an issue surrounding the topic of make-up and determining the appropriate age for young girls to begin wearing make-up. There are some opinions made about the topic that say it should be decided whether a young girl can wear make-up if she has good intentions. One article says that if her motivation to wear make-up is because she wants to fit in with the other girls, then it is fine to let her wear make-up. If she wants to wear it to seek male attention, then she should not be allowed to wear it.
I happen to disagree with this point. Young girls should not be allowed to wear make-up until they are teenagers. I feel that young girls are no longer living in a world where they are allowed to be children anymore. Today’s world is fast paced and constantly forces a standard of beauty on every female. Young girls will never learn to appreciate themselves and their own beauty if they do not face it. Going through a stage of self dislike is a part of puberty. Going through this rough stage allows girls to appreciate themselves more and learn how to face things that they do not like, instead of looking for a quick fix. An article telling all of the reasons young girls should not wear make-up, explains how make-up not only hinders the puberty process, but also damage the premature skin of young girls. Make-up contains a number of harmful chemicals that has the potential to damage matured skin, so there is a greater risk for harming the skin of an adolescent girl. There were a number of reasons that contribute to the reasons why young girls should not wear make-up. One of the most significant reasons is because wearing make-up attracts the attention of both older and young males.
We have to be mindful that the world is a dangerous place that is filled with people who are there to harm children. Many pedophiles would find enjoyment in knowing that people want to allow young girls to wear make-up at young ages. It was said in an article entitled, “Women’s Makeup Draws 33% More Men“, that young girls who wear make-up attract more attention from males. This is definitely not the audience we want young girls to attract. With time comes privilege. At the right age, girls will gain the privilege to wear make-up, and at that appropriate age, attention from men is acceptable.
Young girls should be allowed to wear make-up when the time is right. There is no need to rush into being a woman because being a woman comes with age, wisdom and responsibility. Those are things that do not fit in the description of being a child. We don’t want children to grow up faster than they are supposed to, therefore we should not allow they to have privileges that adult have gained.
